Excellent Restored
This is a beautiful 16' Old Town Otca wood & canvas canoe, serial #170448-16. It was made in 1960 and was completely restored in September 2021 using traditional materials and methods. It weighs a very manageable 71#.
This canoe was one of the last Old Town made the traditional way with red cedar siding and white cedar ribs all held together with clenched brass tacks. It has birch thwarts and seats, ash decks and keel, and spruce inner rails. The outer rails are mahogany and look amazing. It has its original brass stem bands at both ends and Old Town's 'diamond head' bolts holding the seats and thwarts. All threaded hardware are marine grade silicon bronze.
The canoe is in excellent restored condition. It is mostly original as it required minor restoration work: a few ribs and some planking were replaced, some rail tips were mended, a hole in its aft deck was plugged. At some point in its life someone added a center thwart - I kept the bolt holes and installed a short pair of Old Town bolts to decorate the holes. Happily, the canoe had never been fiberglassed. Marine varnish was used on the interior, and the exterior was painted with Epifanes Monourethane Deep Red. And prior to canvassing the cedar exterior received a coating of linseed oil to return some oil to the wood and restore some of its durability and flexibility. It is covered in #12 cotton duck that has been treated with a mildewcide and Kirbys Filler.
